Bud Sugar - Gambia (Official Music Video)

  • We went to Gambia to make a music video,
we went to Gambia to find our long-lost family,
we went to Gambia and we never wanna come back.
    Why did we go?
If you have come this far then most likely you were moved or felt some affinity with the story of our Mam Sue and her unwavering dedication to keep her sons connected to their African heritage!
As kids we always knew that we had been given a unique and special gift from our Mam, our annual pilgrimages moulded us in ways that would not become clear until we were much older, opening our eyes to a culture and experiences that most westerners will never experience.
Picture us as young boys in Gambia on the lush sands of Fajara, there we would test each others bravery by seeing who dare to stick there arm down sand holes left by the crabs. We would never stick our arms as far down or hold them there for as long and our Gambian friends knew that, steely eyed they would hold their arms ram down to the shoulder in sand, staring us dead in the eye with a cheeky grin... then... "Aaaarghh!! Crab, Crab!!" they would scream as they jumped up and we would run off screaming only to turn around and see them all laughing at us and not a side stepper in site.
Further up the beach we can see the fisherman pulling in a huge net, we decide that they look like they need our help, they don't... but they humour us anyway and we all clasp the thick wet ropes and begin to heave, a few minutes pass and we see the fluttering of the fish caught in the net and a few creepy looking jellyfish. After a round of high fives and fist bumps the fisherman then turn to us and hands us two big fish, one red and one silver and thank us for our help, buzzing with a sense of achievement we thank the fishermen and run off down the beach to tell our Mam that we are fishermen now!
As we arrive at Fatimatas compound with our two fish and a couple of crabs, we marched proudly up to the aforementioned Fati and plonked our scaly score upon her table, with a big smile she whipped it up and hurried off to kitchen and we went out to play some more! That night as we all sat round the rice bowl with 2 big baked fish and some crab chunks, it dawned on us that we had not had fish for dinner until that night and we'd been there for almost 2 weeks, infact apart from a little bit of pork a few nights we had mainly had rice with sauce. These two fish weren't just a symbol our Gambianess but actually a pretty big treat for Fatimata and the fam, come to mention it, it was probably a pretty big deal for the fishermen to give em up!
as we scooped the food from the bowl, the light slowly died and the gas lanterns give off their soft glow. We run off into the night to play and the adults started to emerge from their compounds looking to socialise and drink palm wine, tomorrow we fly back to the Uk, back to our comfy, normal east Hull estate lives but for tonight were Gambians and we love it!
This is in essence what drove us to write this song, too us it was a story like no other and deserved a big thank you for the world to see! We knew it was a catchy tune but didn't realise how much the story behind it would click with people, so many similar yet completely unique life stories.
