Given Uganda's anarchic political history, the country was never a soft land for local music to advance in to the levels of the developed world before and after independence…. The citizens instead consumed foreign Music mainly from Europe, USA, Democratic Republic of Congo and South Africa. It was until the early 90’s when the National Resistance Movement ensured a stable society creating space for artists to think, create and produce local music that eventually kicked out the dominant Congolese rhymes sang in Lingala. As we celebrate the country’s 55th independence, we speak to notable artists who played a role in shaping the country’s vibrant music industry that is still growing rapidly.
