MOROCCO 'N' ROLL perform "Lalla Aicha" live @ Rocks (岩石音樂) in Kaohsiung (Taiwan) on Dec. 02, 2017.
The song "Lalla Aicha" is a popular Gnawa song adapted by MOROCCO 'N' ROLL.
'Lalla' is a female honorific title in Arabic roughly equivalent to 'Lady' in English. The title thus means "Lady Aicha".
"Lady Aicha" refers to AICHA KANDICHA (عيشة قنديشة), a female mythological figure in northern Moroccan folklore similar to a jinn (ghost).
She is typically depicted as a beautiful young woman who has the legs of a hoofed animal such as a goat or camel. Although descriptions of Aicha Kandicha vary from region to region within Morocco, she is generally thought to live near water sources, and is said to use her beauty to seduce local men and then madden or kill them.
Band leader Rabi plays a GUIMBRI (الكمبري) on this song. Also known as a SINTIR (سنتير‎) or HEJHOUJ, the guimbri is a three-stringed skin-covered bass plucked lute used by the GNAWA people of Morocco. The body is carved from a log and covered on the playing side with camel skin. The neck is a simple stick with one short and two long goat strings.
MOROCCO 'N' ROLL—sometimes also billed as MOROCCA'N ROLL—is a new international band based in Kaohsiung (Taiwan) that plays Moroccan GNAWA music.
The band members hail from four different countries (Morocco, Russia, the USA and Taiwan). They play an ancient, traditional Moroccan music called GNAWA, mixed with western and Chinese music types (Latino, Blues, Rock 'n' Roll, Jazz, etc.)
GNAWA music (غْناوة or كْناوة) is a rich Moroccan repertoire of ancient African Islamic spiritual religious songs and rhythms. Its well-preserved heritage combines ritual poetry with traditional music and dancing. The music is often performed at communal nights of celebration dedicated to prayer and healing guided by the Gnawa MAALEM, or master musician, and their group of musicians and dancers. Though many of the influences that formed this music can be traced to sub-Saharan West-Africa, its traditional practice is concentrated in Morocco. Nowadays, GNAWA music has spread through many other countries in Africa and Europe.
This deeply hypnotic trance music—marked by low-tone, rhythmic GUIMBRI melodies, call-and-response singing, hand-clapping and KRAKEBS (qaraqib, قراقب; Moroccan cymbals)—may soon take a foothold in Taiwan as well thanks to MOROCCO 'N' ROLL.
    Vocals/Guimbri: Rabia Iguimdrane ('Rabi')
    Keyboard/Vocals: Vadim Novikov
    Drums/Vocals: Craig Sheffield
    Guitar: Levi Wang (汪修年)
