“NOUS SOMMES DES MESSAGERS” (We are Messengers) - Traditional music from Senegal

  • Part documentary, part improvised concert, part music video - “NOUS SOMMES DES MESSAGERS” (We are Messengers) presents a portrait of Senegalese musicians Mbemba Diebaté & Walowalo Niangbalo, and invites the audience to discover the traditional music, instruments, and culture of griots, traditional West African storytellers. (Filmed in Rabat, Morocco, in September 2018)
    Filmmaker Statement:
I met Mbemba and Walowalo at a small concert at 3ZEM in Rabat, Morocco on August 31st 2018. I approached them to ask if they would be interested to make a small film together, but it seemed impossible – they were leaving Rabat at 11am the next morning to go to Marrakech, and I was also leaving Rabat in a few days.
But we all wanted to make this happen; so we decided to meet at 8am the next morning, walk towards the train station, find a place to film a small improvised concert …… and see what happens.
The result is this short film.
