AFCON 2021:Nigeria Super Eagles' Departure and Arrival in Cameroon

  • Super Eagles will be hoping to win their fourth AFCON title when the competition kicks off in Cameroon on January 9, 2022. The team will take on Egypt in their first group game on January 11, before playing Sudan four days later. Their final group game will be against Guinea Bissau on January 19.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria are considered one of the most favourites for the tournament, alongside the Pharaohs of Egypt (same Group D), Desert Foxes of Algeria (Title holder, AFCON 2019) and Senegal (AFCON 2019 runners-up) with less as strong contender in their (Group B) compared to others. However, finalists don't split trophies and neither do their fans. The Super Eagles never lost during the AFCON 2021 qualifiers, though they outrageous conceded seven goals in six matches against Sierra Leone, Benin and Lesotho. Nevertheless, having won the AFCON 2013 trophy, the team is focused on coming out triumphant in this edition of the African Flagship Soccer Tournament. The team will take on Egypt in their first group game on January 11, before playing Sudan four days later. Their final group Game will be against Guinea Bissau on January 19.
The Super Eagles will play without Watford striker Emmanuel Dennis (had issues with his invitation) and the talented Napoli's Victor Osimhen (due to COVID-19), Injuries have also forced the exclusion of Shehu Abdullahi and Leon Balogun from the squad, though the Nigerian camp don't lack European attacking talent with the La Liga and Villarreal standout Samuel Chukwueze, as well as other England-based players led by Kelechi Iheanacho (Leicester FC).
Among the 24 contenders, Nigeria has atleast the fourth-highest prospect of winning their group, knowing that they have the seven-time champions Egypt and Mohamed Salah to confront in Group D. Their percent possibility of getting to the quarter final stage is rated the third highest, at about 62%, while their semi-final and final chances are rated second in the tournament with 40% and 25 % respectively.   These are nothing but AI based projections, in reality the clearest possibility of the super eagles going further starts with their ability to defeat team Egypt headed by the Liverpool star, Mohammed Salah, who is considered one of the best players in the world, known for his speed, dribbling and sterling finishing. These days in football there are no underdogs, as a result there could be some shocking upsets. I hope both fans and compatriots will be ready to absolve the surprises that will be sprung.
